My name is Gene Ramsey, and I would like to welcome you to my downsizing adventure.
Last spring our youngest son, Jacob, got married. My wife and I found ourselves in a home that once contained five people, and suddenly there were only two. We realized now that each of our children have families of their own we didn’t need a large, five-bedroom house. We decided to put sell our home and move to a much smaller (and easier to maintain) home outside of the city. Some incredible things happened!
- We were able to use our equity to purchase the less expensive home, and we no longer have a mortgage payment.
- Our utility payments were cut almost in half.
- We were able to design our space for us.
- The money we are now saving has enabled us to travel more.
There was a lot of work that went into moving into a much smaller space. We donated a lot of things to charities, and we had to make some difficult decisions about pieces of furniture and miscellaneous items that held a lot of sentimental value. Once we finished the purge and moved into our new home, we realized that a lot of the things that we thought we would miss were not needed. We still had the memories.
I have decided to share my journey by writing a soon-to-be released book, Downsize Your Home: How to Do More with Less.
